Unable to setup Default Printer, error message: 0X00000709

In my environments, in few cases, I had the strange problem with installing and defining a default printer. The situation was, that I was perfectly able to install a printer, but I received a strange error: Unable to setup Default Printer, error message: 0X00000709. My first action was trying to set one of the other printers as a default one, but the error persisted. Then I tried to analyze why and I had a strange result. The nature of the problem was in the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows. The error is that it is not possible to change the value of the key Device.
The solution of this problem is to make possible changing the value of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows registry key (in my case it was Read only for all the listed accounts). After I changed the permissions to modify, I was able to define the default printer.

Hope, that I helps someone..

  1. Just found the problem when I was trying to print a Portable Document File (PDF). Many printers were installed on my netbook. However, the default printer can only be seen or choosen when I try to print the document.

    I tried opening any MS OFFICE File, when I try to print, I can choose any printer from among the ones I installed.

    I check the Printers and Devices, and tried to select another Default Printer. The operation was error.

    I tried to follow the simple steps given as suggested in your procedure. It did work.

    Thanks a lot for sharing the brilliant idea.

    Cheers.

  2. I’m having HP printer problems with my HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910 all-in-one printer. This message and a few others have popped;
    My device manager shows 50x iterations of this printer for example, in 2 variations; cant delete the excess/duplicate entries-not allowed;
    Cant properly configure this printer to work as default;
    Cant apply MS updates;
    Have checked for viruses using various software tools=none found;
    Did get the printer to work by some unexplained result where the system has another slightly different printer model which results in being able to print to the problem printer; and lots more. Any suggestions on how best to attack this problem? I have Norton360, disabled Windows firewall; Thanks.

    1. Maybee first uninstall antivirus. It could be a problem in AV (but I am don’t thik so).
      If this will not help try with removing all printer software from Control panel and as the last action remove it form registry.

      Hope that helps.
