It is highly recommended and very advantageous to perform the migration to three additional servers (physical or virtual). Another option is to decommission the SBS server role you do not plan to migrate in order to reallocate its hardware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large; font-family: times new roman,times;\"><strong>Install the server for new Domain Controller<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Install a new server, using the Windows Server 2008R2 Standard Edition media. Assign to the server a static IP address. When prompted, join the existing domain. Before you can promote a new machine to a domain controller, you have to upgrade the AD schema using this steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to SBS Server.<\/li>\n<li>Insert the Windows Server 2008R2 Standard Edition media. Click <strong>Start<\/strong>, locate the <strong>Command prompt <\/strong>and run it <strong>as Administrator<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">&lt;Installation media drive&gt;sourcesadprep<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>adprep \/forestprep <\/strong>and wait for completing the command. It could take a lot of time, depends on the structure of your AD.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>adprep \/domainprep <\/strong>and wait for completing the command. It could take a lot of time, depends on the structure of your AD.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>Exit<\/strong> to close the Command prompt window.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now you can return to new domain controller machine and promote it to a Domain Controller using the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Open Server Manager. Click <strong>Start<\/strong>, point to <strong>Administrative Tools<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Server Manager<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">In <strong>Roles Summary<\/strong>, click <strong>Add Roles<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">If necessary, review the information on the <strong>Before You Begin <\/strong>page and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Select Server Roles <\/strong>page, click the <strong>Active Directory Domain Services <\/strong>check box and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">If necessary, review the information on the <strong>Active Directory Domain Services <\/strong>page and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the Confirm Installation Selections page click <strong>Install<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Installation Results <\/strong>page click <strong>Close this wizard<\/strong> and launch the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard (<strong>dcpromo.exe<\/strong>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Welcome to the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard <\/strong>page click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Operating System Compatibility page <\/strong>review the warning about the default security settings for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controllers and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Choose a Deployment Configuration <\/strong>page click <strong>Existing forest<\/strong>, click <strong>Add a domain controller to an existing domain <\/strong>and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Network Credentials <\/strong>page type the name of the SBS domain. Under <strong>Specify the account credentials to use to perform the installation <\/strong>click <strong>My current logged on credentials<\/strong> or click <strong>Alternate credentials <\/strong>and then click <strong>Set<\/strong>. In the Windows Security dialog box provide the user name and password for an account that can install the additional domain controller. To install an additional domain controller, you must be a member of the Enterprise Admins group or member of the Domain Admins group. When you finished providing credentials, click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Select a Domain <\/strong>page, select the domain of the new domain controller and then click<strong> Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Select a Site page<\/strong>, select a site from the list or select the option to install the domain controller in the site that corresponds to its IP address. Then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Additional Domain Controller Options <\/strong>page make the following selections, and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\"><strong>DNS server<\/strong>: This option is selected by default so that your domain controller can function as a Domain Name System (DNS) server.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\"><strong>Global Catalog<\/strong>: This option is selected by default. It adds the global catalog, read-only directory partitions to the domain controller and it enables global catalog search functionality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\"><strong>Read-only domain controller<\/strong>. This option is not selected by default. It makes the additional domain controller read only &#8211; it makes the domain controller a RODC. Leave this setting unchecked.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">If you do not have static IPv4 and IPv6 addresses assigned to your network adapters, a warning message might appear advising you to set static addresses for both of these protocols, before you can continue. If you have assigned a static IPv4 address to your network adapter and your organization does not use IPv6, you can ignore this message and click <strong>Yes, the computer will use a dynamically assigned IP address (not recommended).<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Location for Database, Log Files, and SYSVOL <\/strong>page click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Directory Services Restore Mode Administrator Password <\/strong>page type and confirm the restore mode password and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>. This password must be used to start AD DS in Directory Service Restore Mode (DSRM) for tasks that must be performed offline.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Summary<\/strong> page review your selections. Click <strong>Back<\/strong> to change any selections, if necessary. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">To save the settings that you have selected to an answer file, that you can use to automate subsequent AD DS operations, click <strong>Export settings<\/strong>. Type the name for your answer file and then click <strong>Save<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">When you are sure that your selections are accurate, click <strong>Next<\/strong> to install AD DS.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Completing the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard<\/strong> page click <strong>Finish<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">You can either select the <strong>Reboot on completion <\/strong>check box to have the server restart automatically or you can restart the server to complete the AD DS installation when you are prompted to do so.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u00a0<strong><span style=\"font-size: large; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Reconfigure Document Redirection, User home folders and Share location<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Document Redirection is configured by default for new users, added through the SBS Administration Console.\u00a0 The default share is <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">\\&lt;SBS_SERVER&gt;RedirectedFolders<\/span>, which points to <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">&lt;DRIVE&gt;:UsersFolderRedirections <\/span>folder (where <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">&lt;SBS_SERVER&gt;<\/span> is the name of the SBS Server and <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">&lt;DRIVE&gt;<\/span> is the drive letter that the folder is located on). The settings for this policy are stored in the <strong>Small Business Server Folder Redirection Group Policy<\/strong>. By default, the \u201cRedirect the folder back to the local userprofile location when the policy is removed\u201d setting is set. With this setting in place, after the Group Policy is removed, clients will copy the contents of their Documents folder from the server back to their local workstation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">To stop Folder Redirection and copy data back to user workstations, follow this steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Click Start, point to Programs, point to <strong>Administrative Tools<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Group Policy Management<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">In the <strong>Group Policy Management <\/strong>console tree, expand the domain tree, right-click on <strong>Small Business Server Folder Redirection Policy<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Edit<\/strong>\u2026.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">In the <strong>Group Policy Management Editor<\/strong>, right-click the <strong>Small Business Server Folder Redirection Policy [domain name] Policy<\/strong> object and choose <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">In the GPO Properties dialog box, click the <strong>Security tab <\/strong>and then click on the <strong>Authenticated Users <\/strong>group.\u00a0 Change the Apply group policy permission from the default of <strong>Allow<\/strong> to the <strong>Deny<\/strong>. Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to close the dialog.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">The folder Redirection will be stopped the next time that a user processes this GPO. By default the object is cached on the user&#8217;s computer and will not be updated, unless another change is detected. To force an update, you must follow these additional steps: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Create or modify a GPO that applies to the computers on which users, who are affected by folder redirection policies, log on. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Edit the GPO.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Under <strong>Computer Configuration <\/strong>expand <strong>Policies<\/strong> and then <strong>Administrative Templates<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Under <strong>Administrative Templates <\/strong>expand <strong>System<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Under <strong>System<\/strong> select <strong>Group Policy<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Double-click the <strong>Folder Redirection policy processing <\/strong>setting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Select the option <strong>Enabled<\/strong> and then click to select the second check box <strong>Process even if the Group Policy objects have not changed<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Exit the <strong>Group Policy Object Editor<\/strong>. Make sure that this new GPO applies to computer accounts for which users are using folder redirection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">For more information, see <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;888203\">http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;888203<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">After you are sure, that all users are logged off and on (it is recommended, that you wait a day or two), you can reestablish redirection to the new machine. The settings for this policy are stored in the <strong>Small Business Server Folder Redirection Group Policy<\/strong>. By default, the \u201cRedirect the folder back to the local user profile location when the policy is removed\u201d setting is set. With this setting in place, after the Group Policy is removed, clients will copy the contents of their Documents folder from the server back to their local workstation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">To re-enable the Folder Redirection policy, follow this steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Create the <strong>FolderRedirections<\/strong> share.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Click <strong>Start<\/strong>, point to <strong>Programs<\/strong>, point to <strong>Administrative Tools<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Group Policy Management<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">In the <strong>Group Policy Management console <\/strong>tree expand the domain tree, right-click on <strong>Small Business Server Folder Redirection Group Policy <\/strong>and then click <strong>Edit\u2026.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the left pane expand <strong>Small Business Server Folder Redirection Group Policy<\/strong>, <strong>Computer configuration<\/strong>, then <strong>Windows Settings <\/strong>and select <strong>Folder Redirection<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">In the right pane right click on the <strong>Documents<\/strong> (or some other folder you wish to redirect) and select <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Target tab<\/strong>, under <strong>Root Path<\/strong>, with <strong>Browse<\/strong> button, select the new <strong>SMB share for folder redirection <\/strong>(do not enter local path).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Click <strong>OK<\/strong> for close the properties dialog box.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Repeat steps from 5 to 7 for every redirected folder (it is highly recommended to control all listed folders to prevent future issues)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">In the <strong>Group Policy Management Editor <\/strong>right-click the <strong>Small Business Server Folder Redirection Group Policy [domain name] Policy <\/strong>object and choose <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">In the <strong>GPO Properties <\/strong>dialog box click the <strong>Security tab <\/strong>and then click on the <strong>Authenticated Users <\/strong>group.\u00a0 Change the <strong>Apply group policy permission <\/strong>from <strong>Deny<\/strong> to <strong>Allow<\/strong>. You must copy all content of all users folders to the new server with same permissions and change locations of users home folders in <strong>Active directory users and computers <\/strong>following this steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the new server create a root folder for Users home folder shares.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Right-click on the folder and go to <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the <strong>Sharing tab <\/strong>click <strong>Advanced sharing <\/strong>and check <strong>Share this folder<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">In <strong>Settings<\/strong>, <strong>Share name<\/strong>, type the name of the share and click <strong>Permissions<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Give <strong>Allow full control <\/strong>permission to <strong>Everyone<\/strong> group.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Use <strong>Robocopy<\/strong> command on SBS server to transfer all content and permissions of the folders:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">robocopy.exe &lt;DRIVE&gt;:UsersShares \\&lt;NEW_SERVER&gt;&lt;NEW_DRIVE&gt;$UsersShares \/Z \/R:5 \/COPYALL \/MIR \/FP \/LOG+:&lt;DRIVE&gt;:UserShares.log \/TEE \/XF UserShares.log<\/span> (where <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">DRIVE<\/span> is drive letter, where shares are located, <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">NEW_SERVER <\/span>is the name of the new server and <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">NEW_DRIVE <\/span>is the destination drive letter on the new server).<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Example: <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">robocopy.exe C:UsersShares \\My_NewServerD$UsersShares \/Z \/R:5 \/COPYALL \/MIR \/FP \/LOG+:C:UserShares.log \/TEE \/XF UserShares.log<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Open <strong>Active Directory Users and Computers <\/strong>and go to <strong>MyBusinessSBSUsers<\/strong> Organization Unit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Select all active users, click on <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On <strong>Profile <\/strong>tab check <strong>Home Folder <\/strong>and select <strong>Connect<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Select <strong>drive letter <\/strong>to connect home folder. In field <strong>To<\/strong> write: <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">\\&lt;NEW_SERVER&gt;&lt;SHARE_NAME&gt;%username%<\/span> (where<span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\"> &lt;NEW_SERVER&gt;<\/span> is the name of the new server, <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">&lt;SHARE_NAME&gt;<\/span> is the name of the share of users home folders).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Close all Windows with <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Repeat all steps between step 8 and 10 for Organization unit <strong>MyBusinessSBSPowerUsers<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Optional: it is recommended, on <strong>Users home folders <\/strong>on SBS Server, to change sharing permissions for <strong>Everyone<\/strong> group to <strong>Deny Full control <\/strong>(it is only to prevent any duplicate using of home folders).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Shared folders should be in SBS server configured thru SBS Console and are all visible there. You can do a migration of shared folders in two different ways, but you must pay attention, to move all of them and that users will not be able to write in both shared folders (the old and the new one) while the migration is going on.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">First you must locate all of the shared folders:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Go to <strong>SBS Administration console<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Click to <strong>Shared folders and Web sites<\/strong> and go to <strong>Shared folders<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Annotate all the shared folders locations and share names.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Now you have to move all data to the new server, but you must preserve all security and share permissions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the new server create a new folder for share.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Right-click on it and select <strong>properties<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Click on <strong>Security tab <\/strong>and give to folder exactly the same permissions as those in the source folder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Click on <strong>Sharing tab, Advanced Sharing <\/strong>and type the name of the share (it is recommended, that is the same as old one).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Click on <strong>Permissions<\/strong> and give to share exactly the same permissions as those in the source share.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">It is recommended that in this time you open properties of Share on the <strong>SBS server <\/strong>and change all share permissions from <strong>Allow<\/strong> to<strong> Deny <\/strong>(just for prevent users to modify content in share, during and after the migration).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">On the SBS Server run <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">robocopy.exe &lt;DRIVE&gt;:&lt;OLD_FOLDER&gt; \\&lt;NEW_SERVER&gt;&lt;NEW_DRIVE&gt;$&lt;NEW_FOLDER&gt; \/Z \/R:5 \/COPYALL \/MIR \/FP\u00a0\/TEE \/XF \/LOG+:&lt;DRIVE&gt;:ShareLog.log <\/span>(where <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">DRIVE<\/span> is the drive letter where share is located, <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">OLD_FOLDER <\/span>is the folder of share on SBS Server,<span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\"> NEW_SERVER <\/span>is the name of the new server, <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">NEW_DRIVE <\/span>is the destination drive letter on the new server and <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">NEW_FOLDER <\/span>is the folder of share in the new sever), to copy data to the new server.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">Repeat all steps for any shared folder.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-family: times new roman,times;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Migrate from SBS 2008 or 2011 (Part 3)\" href=\"https:\/\/em-soft.si\/myblog\/elvis\/?p=278\">Migrate from SBS 2008 or 2011 (Part 3)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Migrate from SBS 2008 or 2011 (Part 1)\" href=\"https:\/\/em-soft.si\/myblog\/elvis\/?p=214\">Migrate from SBS 2008 or 2011 (Part 1)<\/a><a style=\"text-decoration:none\" href=\"\/index.php?s=motilium-20-prix\">.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Environments with Limited Hardware Resources This document assumes that most installations will have sufficient resources to bring up additional servers (physical or virtual) to complete the migration of SBS.
